A woman thinking about getting ultrasound after finding out she's pregnant

If you think you might be pregnant, one of the most helpful steps you can take is confirming what’s happening in your body. An ultrasound is often part of that process and can provide important information about your pregnancy.

At Choices of the Heart, our team offers no-cost, confidential appointments where you can receive medical-grade pregnancy testing and find out whether you qualify for a limited ultrasound. Schedule your appointment today so we can walk alongside you and help you confirm your pregnancy.

What an Ultrasound Actually Does

An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. A small handheld device called a transducer produces sound waves that bounce off internal structures to form images on a screen. These images allow trained professionals to see what may be happening during early pregnancy.

Because the pregnancy is very small at first, different ultrasound methods may be used depending on how far along someone is. Some scans are done on the abdomen, while others are performed internally to provide clearer images during very early pregnancy.

Why an Ultrasound Matters

A home pregnancy test can indicate that pregnancy hormones are present, but it cannot confirm the full picture. An ultrasound provides additional information that helps you better understand your situation, including:

  • Location of the pregnancy: Confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus and not ectopic (developing outside the uterus), which requires immediate treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.
  • Gestational age: Estimates how far along you are, which is essential when considering your options.
  • Viability: Detects whether a heartbeat is present and the pregnancy is developing. Because as many as 1 in 4 pregnancies can end in miscarriage, knowing this detail can help you determine whether follow-up care is needed.
