If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, you likely have a lot of questions, and that’s completely understandable. One question many women ask is about the abortion pill: what it is, how it works, and what to know before considering it. Getting accurate information is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself right now.
Our team at Choices of the Heart is here for you. Schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment today, and let us walk alongside you with the facts and support you deserve.
Understanding How It Works
The abortion pill, also called a medical abortion, uses two drugs to end a pregnancy. The FDA approves this method only through 10 weeks gestation. Taking these drugs beyond that window is not recommended and can pose additional health risks.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone a pregnancy needs to develop. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy can no longer continue. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.
Risks and Side Effects to Know
Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding will occur as the abortion drugs are taken, but other side effects can occur as well, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, and headache.
Beyond side effects, there are also risks to be aware of, such as infection, heavy or prolonged bleeding, and incomplete abortion, where pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus and may require surgical treatment.
Some of these complications can become serious without prompt medical attention, which is why having accurate information about your pregnancy beforehand is so important.
